A 55 Year Reunion

Five years after our last reunion in 2018, the class of 1968 agreed to get together once more and in view of the redevelopment work at our school chose to visit Brighton Girls School for this year’s reunion.

Sadly numbers were restricted by health complications and the need to travel to Brighton, but a dozen of the year got together for an extremely enjoyable afternoon on Saturday 10th June together with their former music teacher, Hilary Strong (nee Wheeler).

We were delighted to be met by Rebecca Findlay, Head of Community who is responsible for the school’s Alumnae relations. The school had laid on banners and drinks to welcome us back in style in the refurbished hall and with a buffet lunch shared by all it was proved a very enjoyable event.

After lunch, Rebecca kindly took us on a tour of the school, including the fantastic new music studios in the basement which had been recently created. With several musicians in the group, we were amazed at the incredible provision for music in the school nowadays. The junior house brought back memories for many, but we were interested to learn that our unusual class names, (Upper III, Lower IV etc.) have been replaced with the now standardised year groups common to all schools.

We also loved the development of the House membership as a major part of school life, and especially enjoyed the mottos and motivational pieces we found around the school for each of the four houses we remembered from our time there. Rebecca had asked us to find memorabilia to share with her for the school archive and one of our number wore her Gray house badge on the day (and her old panama hat!). We also enjoyed looking at team photos and identifying members of various squads.

All involved were very grateful to Rebecca for her patience and assistance throughout our visit. She made our day!

If you’re interested in seeing the new school look, do go along on 1st July for the Summer Garden Party. We know you’ll be impressed.
