Students, parents and staff at Brighton and Hove High GDST were celebrating excellent A Level results this morning. Head, Jennifer Smith, said, “We are very pleased that the girls’ hard work has paid off. Half of all grades were A* or A and there were also some outstanding individual achievements, including those of our Head Girl, Monica Kelada, who achieved three A* grades and is off to study Medicine at Imperial and our Deputy Head Girl, Eleanor Thomas, who achieved four A* grades and will now study English at Sussex.

This is a cohort who have been fully immersed, with the exception of Maths and Classics, in the new – arguably more challenging – linear A Levels and it is gratifying to see that the school’s high standards of academic achievement are being maintained: every girl, for instance, who took English Literature achieved A*; Mathematics students achieved 87% A*/A; 70% of Modern Languages grades were A*/A, as were 100% of Art grades.

Girls thoroughly deserve their success, but more important than their academic grades, in my view, is what they have achieved in terms of personal growth and social understanding during their time at school. This is reflected, I feel, in the diverse range of destinations they have chosen for their next steps – from Medieval Languages at Cambridge to Fashion Marketing at Manchester; Foundation Art at Brighton Met to Civil Engineering at Queens. I believe their experience at BHHS has given them the resilience, courage and imagination to thrive on the complexities and challenges of modern life and I am very proud of them all.”
